Amidst all the Bible thumping this story was replete with revenge and the threat, and in the end, actual, violence. So, I must paraphrase sardonically with Mr Bennet, ‘what an idea of Christian charity’. Aside from that, the story is generally of the exaggerated ilk, magnifying the faults of some - Lydia, Wickham, Caroline Bingley to an extent and extolling the virtues, to ridiculous proportions, of others - Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Darcy. In between there are out of character Mr and Mrs Bennet, L Cde B and Ms A de B. I don’t advocate vigilante justice but this story does just that. As a matter of fact there are so many philosophical contradictions in here that you have to wonder how a real P&P Elizabeth would have viewed them, like telling a forger “it’s wrong to forge for the bad guys but it’s ok to do it for me if my purpose is morally upright.” The love story here is a straight dud and good lord, if I read another fan fic about how Elizabeth is a shorty with porcelain skin- basically all looks and no substance, I’ll probably stop reading so much P&P FF. Really, many writers need to revisit the original and not continue to build fan fiction myth. Overall, a simple and somewhat annoying read. Would not reread. This is quite a change for the P&P women: Ms. Kendig rewrites Lady Catherine, daughter Anne, and Jane Bennet into people quite different from canon. This story will be especially enjoyable for those who like Mr. Bennet to finally 'see the light' and take charge of his wife and younger daughters. You'll be surprised at how this happens - it's a good plot twist.Darcy and Elizabeth remain in character, but the aftermath of the Hunsford's proposal changes to drive the new plot of dealing with Wickham's venality. Col. Fitzwilliam gets to play a large role, and Bingley must finally make up his mind to act decisively rather than expeditiously.We get a minimum of Mr. Collins, and only the briefest glimpses of Georgiana, but enough to satisfy the storyline.There are several romances that needs HEAs, and each gets enough time to be resolved. A two-chapter epilogue wraps up the future for those left unwed. As always, Ms. Kendig writes an entertaining variant, and I'm happy to recommend this one as well.
